feeling your computer getting slower though the years is one of the most heartbreaking things ever
I’m not bringing it up because it’s a sad situation where people who are part of oppressed groups have been misled to believe that they’re not in any negative situation, and that the people trying to help them are the enemy. I have nothing bad to say about them because they’re not stupid, simply misled and told the wrong things by the wrong people.
Misled? Really? These oppressed people just aren’t as smart as their paternalist protectors, right?
Maybe—just maybe—you’re entirely wrong about this movement. And each time you assign someone as a “gender traitor” or a “race traitor” because they think differently than you, you’re the actual asshole.
I’m a feminist who is tired of being a public relations scapegoat. I am not “misinformed”. I have the agency to think on my own; I have control over myself; I realize that there are many oppressive groups in control of me.
But the most oppressive of all is the group who says “There’s no way you can think for yourself. Follow me—for your own good.”
Ultimately, the idiot misogynists will leave.
Those trying to shout over the misogynists, to reveal what Zoe Quinn did to the pro-feminist gaming charity The Fine Young Capitalists, will leave. Those trying to shout over the misogynists, to reveal what Zoe did to the $400,000 Game Jam project, will leave. Those trying to shout over the misogynists, to reveal what Zoe did to Wizardchan or how she scapegoated /v/ or how she got a reddit mod to censor facts, will leave. Those trying to hold her to the same standards as Josh Mittingly, given a much smaller amount of evidence, will leave.
There will be no one left but “Twitter activists” supporting her against a now-imagined threat. Never seeing the evidence because every journalist had to recuse themselves from carrying it. These “activists” will fight no one. They will shout at the void. They will feed Africans on a diet of up-thumbs; they will cure diseases by retweeting videos.
And real feminists will stick their noses into a collection by Audre Lorde, shrug, and be forced to accept that the patriarchs gave them something that resembled progress.
If you don’t care much about the state of the scene, then no, you probably shouldn’t care too much about this — aside from the extent to which the behaviors outlined in the blog might serve as a cautionary tale for your love life. I hadn’t realized how much those behaviors have reflected other people’s experiences. I’d assumed much of it was Zoe’s unique brand.
